In towns close to the country’s borders, Israel is purchasing and handing out 10,000 rifles to arm civilian security teams in preparation for the next phase of Israel’s war on Gaza.
National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir announced that residents of mixed Jewish-Arab cities and West Bank settlements will also receive a portion of these firearms.
The far-right Otzma Yehudit party says it has already purchased 4,000 “assault rifles” and begun distributing them to targeted areas. The Israeli government is also purchasing helmets and bulletproof vests to distribute as well.
According to Gvir, the weapons, armor and other equipment will be handed out to “hundreds of towns that have civilian security teams linked to the Israel Police’s Border Police force.”
The civilian security teams are being set up in small towns and communities in Israel’s periphery as well as in the West Bank settlements where residents were targeted by Hamas over the weekend.
“We will turn the world upside down so that towns are protected,” Gvir promised. “I have given instructions for massively arming the civilian security teams.”

What was unthinkable a mere week ago has become a reality as Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and National Unity party leader Benny Gantz have agreed to join forces in the fight against Hamas.
These two, along with National Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, have created a new “emergency war government” that will call all the shots for the time being while the rest of the government, including all non-wartime legislation, remains suspended.
Another name for this is martial law in that the normal operations of Israel’s government are now paused indefinitely, including the planned judicial overhaul that was supposed to occur.
Though certain decisions will still need to be approved by the full Israeli cabinet, the “vast majority of critical calls will be made in the narrow forum,” reports the Times of Israel.
Most of the Israeli public supports the new emergency war government, we are told, seeing it as a necessity to address the events that occurred over the weekend, which some are calling an “inside job” and a planned operation as part of Israel’s planned expansion of its land mass size.
“The moment calls for unity,” Netanyahu said in a brief and to-the-point statement about the new emergency war government ruling Israel.
Now, five members of the Gantz’s National Unity party will be added to Israel’s broader security cabinet, which operates under every government in Israel regardless of who is in charge.
“Likud and National Unity agreed that no legislation in the Knesset or government resolutions will be advanced during the war which are not related to managing the war,” the Times of Israel reports.
“They also agreed that the term of Bank of Israel chief Amir Yaron will be extended through the end of the war.”
One seat will remain open for Opposition Leader Yair Lapid, who was the first to offer an emergency unity government on Saturday evening following the attacks. A source close to Lapid says that there are no active talks for him to join the coalition.
Yisrael Beytenu leader Avigdor Liberman reiterated his party’s position that it will not join the emergency war government unless everyone involved agrees “to completely obliterate the Hamas terrorist group.”
