Back in September 2023, Paris Olympics organizers and partners started hiring people to fill about 16,000 vacancies in key sectors like catering, security, transport and cleaning during the event. Now, over 3,500 applicants for the jobs connected with the Games have been rejected due to concerns over terror links and security threats.
With nearly one million people expected to receive accreditations for Olympic roles, stringent security measures are being implemented. Among those barred from participation are 130 individuals flagged under “Fiche S,” the French indicator used by law enforcement to flag individuals considered to be serious threats to national security. There are also others reportedly associated with Islamist groups and with organizations in the far-left and far-right.
The heightened safety measures were brought about by the terrorist attack on a Russian concert hall near Moscow on March 22 that claimed the lives of 145 people and injured more than 500 others. It was just days after Russian President Vladimir Putin began his fifth term of office.
“The terrorists used a flammable liquid to set fire to the concert hall’s premises, where spectators were located, including wounded,” Russia’s Investigative Committee said. The Islamic State group has said four of its members carried out the attack.
Security checks may be further intensified as more than 300,000 people all over Europe have already signed up to volunteer at the Paris 2024 Games, scheduled from July 26 to August 11, to play their part in France’s first time hosting the Games in a century.
“Behind every great champion, there is a volunteer,” says Tony Estanguet, president of the Paris 2024 Organizing Committee for the Olympic and Paralympic Games. Estanguent thanked the to-be volunteers for “their enthusiasm, energy and uniqueness,” adding that “they will play a key role in the success of the Games, helping to make them an unforgettable event.”
The Committee only called for 45,000 volunteers but the turnout was nearly seven times the available roles. From welcoming and directing spectators to leading sports delegations to competition venues and providing medical assistance, they will have their work cut out.
Meanwhile, Christian crosses have been removed from the Paris skyline in promotional art for the Olympics, to appease secularists, atheists and religious minorities. The Paris government has also cleared out migrant tent encampments in the city to appear more presentable to the international community. Officials in San Francisco, California, performed a similar clear-out of the homeless so the city would appear less run down while Chinese dictator Xi Jinping was visiting. Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo took the plunge into the murky waters of River Seine to show that the body of water is clean enough for Olympic events this month. Wearing goggles and a wet suit, the 65-year-old Hidalgo swam breaststroke under bright sunshine on July 17 morning before immersing her face and beginning a front crawl, covering about 100 meters downstream.
“It is wonderful, very, very pleasant,” Hidalgo told reporters of the greenish water. “It’s fresh but not cold.”
The swimming leg of the Olympics triathlon is set to take place in its waters on July 30-31 and August 5, followed by the open-water swimming on August 8-9.
Senior local officials and Estanguet, a gold medal-winning canoeist who has been sweating on the state of the Seine, joined her later. “Today is a confirmation that we are exactly where we meant to be,” Estanguet said. “We are now ready to organize the games in the Seine.”
Hidalgo and the officials swam in front of more than 150 journalists to demonstrate that the river was ready, but also to underline what is meant to be one of the key legacy achievements of Paris 2024. The mayor plans to create three public bathing areas in the Seine for the city’s residents next year.
According to reports, the river had been continually failing water quality tests until the start of this month despite an investment of 1.4 billion euros ($1.5 billion) to prevent sewage leaks into the waterway. It has already been a century since swimming was banned in the river.
Hidalgo followed French Sports Minister Amelie Oudea Castera’s same “public relations” move in swimming in the River Seine on July 13.
